All About Us

The late Mwl Julius Kambarage Nyerere was born in Butiama on April 13th, 1922 and died on October 14th, 1999 and was buried in Butiama. TwendeButiama is therefore a Bicycle tour which mobilises cyclists from different places to Butiama which takes place annually on April (7th to 11th) and October (3rd-14th).

TwendeButiama® is the most respected and longest Endurance Cycling Events in Tanzania. It is seen as a pinnacle of Cyclists’ achievement not only in cycling circles but the greater sporting community as well.

Todate, over 300 cyclists (Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar) have participated TwendeButiama Bicycle Tour including cyclists, environmentalists, and health practitioners since its inception in 2018.

How Are We Unique

Twende Butiama® is the only organization approved to manage the Twende Butiama Annual Grand Bicycle Tour from Dar es Salaam to Butiama.

As an active affiliate of Cycling Association of Tanzania (CAT) and Dar es Salaam Cycling Association, Twende Butiama recognizes and encourages riders of all ages to participate TWENDE BUTIAMA Annual Grand Bicycle Tour to Mwitongo Village, Butiama.

TwendeButiama is an exceptional Endurance Bicycle Tour which combines the distance, terrain and weather; no other event that tests a cyclist spirit from beginning to end. The Tour inspires everyone who has been a part of it – racer, crew, staff and fans alike.

It All Started in 2018

TwendeButiama® is a Mwalimu Nyerere Bicycle Tour registered under the name “TwendeButiama Bicycle Club. The Club started its bicycle Tours back in 2018 and it was formerly registered on June 3rd, 2021 under the National Sports Council vide Certificate No. NSC 12708. Club Headquarters are based in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. TwendeButiama® is a member of Cycling Association of Tanzania (CAT) who are the regulators of Cycling activities in Tanzania.

Rules We Live By

Rules & Regulations

TwendeButiama® operates based on the rules and regulations under the Sports guidelines laid down by the National Sports Act of 1967. The club is operating based on its Constitution as mandated by members of the Club and committees including Operations, Secretariates, Financial, and Accounts. The club secretariat is managed by the Chairperson, vice Chairperson, Secretary, Vice Secretary, and Accountant who are the electees of members of the Club.

The Days & Nights

How We Do It

TwendeButiama is a 1448km long bicycle ride which starts in Dar es Salaam to Butiama. The tour passes a spectacular terrain from the Dar es Salaam coastline to the shores of Lake Victoria. TwendeButiama Bicycle Tour takes place twice a year; every April on Nyerere’s Birthday (April 7th-11th) and every October to commemorate the death anniversary (October 3rd-14th). The April Tour is a Five-Day Ultra Endurance where cyclists cycle an average of 280km a day. The tour starts early mornings and sometimes the rides end in the night.
